Sunsets, Sand Dunes, Fresh Fruit on Southwest Michigan Coast

White sand beaches and blue water makes the beach scenes at Saugatuck and southwest Michigan look almost like those in southern California.

As the Star of Saugatuck came to the mouth of Kalamazoo River and approached Lake Michigan at dusk, the pilot advised us that we were in for a special treat. “The clouds are lifting and you’ll get to see a beautiful sunset.” She was so right.

Movie review: “Stardust”

The hyper-imaginative world of Neil Gaiman is resplendently realized by director Matthew Vaughn in the new romantic fantasy, “Stardust.”

From their once-upon-a-time opening, Vaughn and his co-writer Jane Goldman swiftly pile on a dizzying array of eccentric characters with direct and indirect connections to their hero, Tristan (Charlie Cox), a young man with true love in his future and a complicated birthright in his past.

Florissant Youth Receives a Red Cross Lifesaver Award

The American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter presented Lifesaver Awards to six residents and the National Certificate of Merit to two residents from the St. Louis metropolitan area. Thirteen-year-old Kimberly Boyd saved her father’s life. Early one morning, Larry Boyd suffered an asthma attack and called out to Kimberly for help. Shortly after this plea, he collapsed on the floor. Kimberly immediately called 911 and began performing CPR, repeating the cycles for nearly five minutes before the paramedics arrived to continue care.

MSHSAA Preview: Parkway Softball Tournament Opens 2007-2008 High School Fall Season

Missouri State High School Activities Association member high schools begin interscholastic competition Monday, Aug. 20, in three girls sports; Golf, Softball, Tennis.

Cross Country, Boys Soccer, Girls Volleyball and Boys Swimming open Aug. 27. Football, which opens Aug. 30, will be previewed in the next edition of The Independent News.
