Hazelwood Holds Reception to Honor Supt. Chris Wright Nicastro

The Hazelwood School District Board of Education has scheduled a reception for 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, July 30, to honor the retirement of Superintendent Chris L. Wright Nicastro.

The reception will also recognize the fact that the State Board of Education has selected Nicastro as the commissioner of education for the state of Missouri. As the lead educational agent in the state, the commissioner heads the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, which provides support and leadership for more than 500 school districts statewide.

The reception will be held at The HSD Learning Center, 15955 New Halls Ferry Road. The reception is open to the public. Attendees should RSVP to the communications office at 314-953-5045 or info@hazelwoodschools.org

Firefighters Credited With Saving a Family From Carbon Monoxide Poison

Two Florissant firefighters and a fire captain have been credited with helping save the lives of up to six members of a Florissant family who apparently were overcome with carbon monoxide poisoning.

Florissant Seeking Grant to Upgrade St. Ferdinand Park

City parks were on the agenda at the Florissant City Council meeting this week.

The City of Florissant is requesting a grant from the Municipal Parks Grant Commission in order to help develop a master plan for St. Ferdinand Park. The city council unanimously approved a resolution supporting the grant application.

Mayor Robert Lowery explained that the grant will help the city improve the park. “It’s a beautiful park now,” he said, “now what else can we do?”

Garden Plaza of Florissant Denied by P & Z, Council Will Require 7 ‘Yes’ Votes


IN LIMBO: Trees and bushes rise above the unoccupied duplex at the proposed Garden Plaza development off Parker Road. A previous developer built a few duplexes, but had to abandon the project leaving an eyesore in the views of area neighbors. Some came to the Florissant Planning and Zoning Commission last week where the P&Z recommended denial for a new retirement and nursing home development.

Summer Learning Offers Different Experiences For Central Middle Students

For a group of new sixth graders at Hazelwood Central Middle School, the day’s lesson focused on learning how to work together as a team and developing leadership with a program called ROPES.
