3rd Annual Locks of Love at Hair Benders on March 13

The third annual Locks of Love, the non-profit group providing hairpieces (shown in above photo) to disadvantaged children (21 and younger) suffering from long-term medical hair loss, will be held at Hair Benders stylist, 2705 North Hwy 67, Florissant, Saturday, March 13.

Karen McKay is Locks of Love event chair. As owner of Hair Benders, McKay has been part of the American Cancer Society’s Look Good-Feel Better program for several years. “These custom-fitted hair prosthetics are provided free of charge,” said McKay who noted that the average prosthetics retail is from $3,500 to $6,000.

Each hairpiece is made from donated human hair. Because of the vacuum seal technology, only the wearer of the hairpiece may remove it. “Children can dismiss insecurities about being start at, classmates pulling off their hairpiece or losing it,” said McKay. The young people can swim, shower and engage in sports. “They can be kids again,” said McKay.

This year’s event is in honor of the late  Lisa Marie (Davis) McKenney, who had donated to Locks of Love before major cancer treatment For more information call 838-9500.
