The racial makeup of the city was 44.75% White , 52.41% African American , 0.11% Native American , 0.67% Asian , 0.02% Pacific Islander , 0.38% from other races , and 1.67% from two or more races. There were 8,612 households out of which 36.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.9% were married couples living together, 25.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 27.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.

The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.14. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.09.
