Quartermaster Jack Brown (left) and Commander Tom Mundell of VFW Post 3944 received a new American flag at Armstrong Elementary School in the Hazelwood School District. Brown’s granddaughter is a third-grader at the school.

During  a  recent small ceremony in front of the school, Armstrong Elementary School in the Hazelwood School District received a new American flag from VFW Post 3944, Overland/St. Ann.

Tom Mundell, commander, and Jack Brown, quartermaster, presided over the event, drawing down the old flag with a salute before raising the new flag.

“We are pleased that the VFW provided our school with a new flag for the new school year,” said Dr. Amy Dittmar, principal of Armstrong Elementary. “We appreciate their generosity and support.”

Mundell explained that the VFW not only helps veterans and their families, but supports schools and other community needs.

“We decided the school needed a new flag,” said Mundell. “By doing this, we are promoting patriotism and American honor among the students so that they understand the importance of honoring the flag and what it stands for.”

“We’ll come back to the school to talk to the kids about the flag after school starts,” he said.

Logan Brown, a third-grade student at Armstrong, is the granddaughter of Quartermaster Brown. Her mother, Stephanie Herzog, helped coordinate the ceremony. She is also the school’s Parent-Teacher Association secretary.

The old flag will be disposed of properly by VFW Post 3944 with assistance from an area Boy Scout troop.
