Art McCoy will be the keynote speaker at the Martin Luther King Jr. annual celebration Jan. 18 at STLCC-Florissant Valley.

St. Louis Community College-Florissant Valley will host its annual celebration in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at 3 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 18, in the Terry M. Fischer Theatre on campus, 3400 Pershall Road.

The theme is “Mobilizing Community Action: All Hands In.”

Art McCoy, Ph.D., will serve as keynote speaker. McCoy, at age 19, he became the youngest certified teacher in Missouri, teaching mathematics in the Rockwood School District.

At 26, he began teaching at the university level. In December 2010, he was named the first African-American superintendent of schools of Ferguson-Florissant School District, and its youngest at age 33. He received many awards while at Ferguson-Florissant. He left the district in early 2014. He is now chief academic officer and superintendent-in-residence of the MIND Research Institute.

McCoy has served on numerous executive boards and councils, including the boards of the Urban League, Midwest Health Initiative, and Boy Scouts of America, and the Missouri Association of School Administrators, Missouri School Board Association, Federal Reserve Bank Advisory Committee, St. Louis Magic House. He also was appointed by Gov. Jay Nixon to serve on the Harris Stowe-State University Board of Regents.

The celebration at Florissant Valley will feature the winners of the annual North County Churches Uniting for Racial Harmony and Justice (NCCU) Oratorical Contest and musical performances.

The event is sponsored by the college and NCCU. Admission is free and seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Special accommodations are available for individuals with disabilities by calling 314-513-4551.
