Hawks Host DeSmet, New Football Coaches Debut For East, West Hazelwood, F-F Schools Open Season

Hazelwood Central Football, coming off two straight years as Missouri Class Six State Championship seasons, host a 1 p.m. game Aug. 28 against DeSmet Jesuit High, a team that had title hopes dashed last year in the Class Six Semifinals.

Massey Rates Hazelwood Central 4th Class 6 Football, 6th Overall In State

Despite winning back to back Missouri State Class Six Football titles the last two years Hazelwood Central High School seems to get no love from Ken Massey.

Massey, who uses algorithms to part of NCAA Division I Football Bowl Championships since 1999 to determine the national championship game, uses the same algorithm to determine high school football ratings nationwide and in each state. In Missouri Hazelwood Central is rated by Massey fourth in Class Six and Sixth overall statewide. Kansas City-Rockhurst, who was eliminated in the quarterfinals the last two years to Hazelwood Central’s title opponents the last two years, is rated first overall statewide and in Class Six.

High Schools opened tryouts and practices Aug. 9 for the fall athletic teams, especially for those who work out outdoors, but had to deal with over 90-degree temperatures and over 100-degree heat indices due to excess humidity.

Going 2-2 In District 10 Tourney Ends Season For Florissant Legion Post 444

Two weeks ago the Florissant American Legion Post 444 Senior Baseball team saw their 2010 season come to an end after going 2-2 in the District 10 Senior Legion Tournament.

Prep Fall 2010 Sports Practices Begin Aug. 9, Competition Begins Aug. 23

Missouri State High School Activities Association member institutions, and affiliated registered schools, will begin practices for fall sports teams, weather permitting.

High School Football teams can run preseason scrimmages Aug 20 or 21 and can open the season Aug 27 or 28. Fall Softball, Girls Golf and Girls Tennis teams open the season as early as Aug. 23 while Boys Soccer, Boys Swimming and Diving, Cross Country, Girls Volleyball and Field Hockey can begin as early as Aug. 27.

Florissant Post 444 Legion Senior Baseball Wins Dist. 10 Tourney Opener

Florissant American Legion Post 444 Senior Baseball team opened the District 10 Tournament July 11with a 19-15 win over Oakville at ABC Park, St. Ann.

Game stats from July 11 were not available at press time. Post 444 Seniors were to play Manchester July 13 at Ellisville AA. Dates, times and site(s) for the rest of the tournament were not available at press time.

American National Varsity (18-Under) Baseball Were 27-12 as of July 7

American National Baseball, varsity (18 and under level) has won at least 24 games, overall, prior to July 7, to go with 12 losses and at the same time was 10-4 in the St. Louis Amateur Baseball Association.

Cordez Vaughn New Football Coach at Hazelwood West

Cordez Vaughn

The Hazelwood School District Board of Education approved the hiring of Cordez Vaughn as the new head football coach of Hazelwood West High School. Vaughn is a special education teacher at Hazelwood West. He has served as a varsity assistant coach and defensive coordinator for the team since January 2009.
