Eagle watch and trail walk set for Jan. 23 at Fort Belle Fontaine Park

The Friends of Fort Belle Fontaine Park will host an Eagle Watch and Trail Walk on Saturday, Jan. 23, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.   The event is free and open to the public. A live Eagle, several birds of prey, will on on-site for a close-up view, along with a naturalist.

Well known “birder,”  Kraig Paradise, will be available to help visitors view the majestic birds through telescopes, which will be provided.  Hot chocolate, marshmallows and a warm fire will be free to visitors, located at the top of the Grand Staircase.  Be sure to dress warm and bring binoculars.

Fort Belle Fontaine Park offers a panoramic view of the Missouri River and overlooks the location where Lewis and Clark camped in 1804 and 1806.  Look for eagles along the Missouri River from the Grand Staircase, built by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in the 1930s.  There will be guided hikes on the three-mile trail through prairie lands and the riverfront at noon and 1 p.m.

Information will also be available on becoming a member of the Friends of Fort Belle Fontaine Park, which holds a 501(c)(3) status under St. Louis County’s Historic Sites Commission.  Friends of Fort Belle Fontaine are dedicated to preserving the park, improving facilities and introducing the park to many area residents who are not aware of the existence of this incredible historic and natural site.  The park is located at 13002 Bellefontaine Road, three miles north of I-270 in Spanish Lake.
