Florissant, Hazelwood Open Cooling Centers to help Residents Cope with High Temperatures
The cities of Hazelwood and Florissant have opened cooling centers to help residents escape the excessive heat.
Florissant has designated both Civic Centers as cooling stations for anyone seeking relief from the excessive heat that will be hitting our area the next few days.
The John F. Kennedy Community Center (921-4250) is located at 315 Howdershell Road and will be open till 9 p.m. during the week and open till 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
The James J. Eagan Center (921-4466) is located at the intersection of Parker Road and Waterford Drive and will remain open until 9 p.m. during the rest of this week and this weekend.
Hazelwood has opened the Hazelwood Community Center and Civic Center East as cooling centers during the day.
The Hazelwood Community Center is located at 1186 Teson Road in White Birch Park. Civic Center East is at 8969 Dunn Road along the outer road next to I-270.
The centers will be open Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.
According to Hazelwood’s Emergency Management Director, Fire Chief Dave Radel, “The worst hours of extreme heat occur during daylight hours, so residents are advised to stay out of the sun as much as possible. For those working outdoors, be sure to take frequent breaks and drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. People who don’t have air conditioning (AC) are encouraged to use one of our cooling centers or at least have a fan in front of them blowing air.”
Here are other tips provided by Chief Radel to cope with the extreme heat:
Be sure to check on your neighbors, especially if they are elderly.
If you discover someone suffering from a heat-related problem, call 911.
Wear loose-fitting clothing. Cotton is better because it’s more absorbent.
Drink plenty of water and less caffeine, beer, and soda.
Avoid extraneous activity outdoors during the heat of the day. Take the heat seriously.
