Carla Tuetken, visual arts teacher at Hazelwood West High School, was selected as the 2010 Master Teacher Fellow at the Saint Louis Art Museum.

Carla Tuetken, a visual arts teacher at Hazelwood West High School, was selected as the 2010 Master Teacher Fellow at the Saint Louis Art Museum, and this summer, she began fulfilling the responsibilities of her new role.

As the master teacher fellow, Tuetken created ideas to increase activities and involvement among teens at the museum, she developed lessons for teachers to implement before or after museum visits, created and wrote lessons for a new curriculum kit, participated in workshops and led a workshop for new teachers. In October 2010, she will lead a high school workshop, and in January 2011, she will lead another teacher workshop. As the year progresses, she will explore and gather information from the museum collection and conduct research.

“I learned much this summer that I will be able to incorporate into my classrooms this year through research, integration and collaboration,” said Tuetken.

Not only did she spend time working as a master teacher fellow, she attended the Teacher Institute in Contemporary Art (TICA) Program at the Art Institute of Chicago for a week in June, and she participated in a teacher workshop at the Kansas City Art Institute in July.

She learned “many new art techniques and concepts” from each experience.

At the Saint Louis Art Museum, she worked with museum educators and docents to “further my knowledge of many concepts and ideas of artists in times both present and past. I was also able to work with other educators in the St. Louis area and learned various techniques and practices,” she said.

In Kansas City, she attended the Educators Art Lab and took a fibers workshop. “We learned wet felting, nuno felting and needle felting.” She also took art history classes focusing on ancient art. story courtesy of Hazelwood Communications Dept.)
