Larry Marsh Goes to Germany To Conduct, Judge at Music Festival

Larry Marsh, director of the Northwinds Concert Band, was one of four judges and a guest conductor at the famed Roethenbach Music Festival in Germany last month.
On July 4, Northwinds Concert Band under the direction of Larry Marsh presented a program of patriotic music before the fireworks at the Florissant Civic Center.
Early the next morning Marsh flew to Germany where he took part in a music festival in Roethenbach in southern Germany, serving as guest conductor and an expert judge for the concert competitions.
The Lindau district festival featured three evenings of concerts under a tent the size of a football field. On the last day of the event, all 47 bands gathered in the village square.
Marsh was one of the four honored conductors who led the 2500 assembled musicians in opening marches and hymns before the parade through the village.
“It was an overwhelming experience,” said Marsh, who has conducted Florissant’s
Northwinds band for 30 years and is the director of UMSL’s German Culture Center. “Standing there in front of all those fine musicians in their traditional uniforms, with the village hall and church in the background on a beautiful summer day, is something I will never forget.”
The German band is celebrating its 170th anniversary.
