Hazelwood Central Track & Field Teams Sweep Class Four State

By Jim Wieners

Hazelwood Central saved their best for last as the Hawks sweep the Boys and Girls Class Four Missouri State Activities Association Track & Field Championships May 25 in Jefferson City at Lincoln University’s Dwight T. Reed Stadium.

It is the second time Hazelwood Central won both Boys and Girls Track & Field in the same year. The only other time was in 1987, in Class 4A, the first state title for both teams. Boys Track & Field have won five state titles and is the first team among the Hazelwood Schools to win four straight (and counting) while the Girls have won three state titles.

The athletes that were keys to a Hawk sweep were Marcus Davis and Ashley Henderson.  Davis was a State Champion in the 400-Meter Dash and was on the State Champion 4×200 Relay team. Henderson won State titles in the 100- and 200-Meter Dashes and was on the State Championship 4×200 Relay team that helped a Boys-Girls sweep in the relay event.

The state titles were the only state trophies Hazelwood Central won in 2012-2013. The Hawks were a Class Five Girls Basketball Quarterfinalist.

With the Boys and Girls State Track & Field titles Hazelwood Central has won 19 MSHSAA state titles since Hazelwood High became Hazelwood Central in 1974-1975. Add the three state titles Hazelwood High won prior to the end of the 1973-1974 school year and the Hawks have now won 22 state titles, most by any Suburban North Conference team as they surpassed the 21 athletic titles won by Ritenour.

Of the other current Suburban North teams Hazelwood East won 18, Riverview Gardens won 11, McCluer won 10, and McCluer North won eight while Hazelwood West and Pattonville each won two.

State titles do not include Ice Hockey, Lacrosse or Boys Volleyball.

Besides Boys and Girls Track & Field Hazelwood High and Hazelwood Central combined won five state football titles (1972, 1985, 1996, 2008, 2009) with the 1972 Hazelwood High team sharing the Class 4A title with Kansas City Southwest. Hazelwood High won their last state title in Baseball (1974) and Hazelwood Central won their first state title in Boys Tennis (1977). Hazelwood Central won two titles each in Baseball (1981, 1982) and Softball (1983, 1985) and a won title each in Girls Cross Country (1986) and Boys Soccer (1989) while Hazelwood High won Wrestling in 1969, the first title in school history.

OF THE OTHER FLORISSANT VALLEY AREA Suburban North Conference schools with more than two state titles most of HAZELWOOD EAST’S state titles were in Boys Track & Field (six) and Girls Track & Field (five) and both swept three in a row (1995-1997) McCLUER NORTH won three in a row in Wrestling (1988-1990) and three in Boys Basketball (2007, 2011, 2012) and McCLUER won two titles each in Football (1968-1969), Boys Tennis (1968-1969) and Boys Basketball (1974-1975).
