Theatre of the Deaf Returns with ‘Arsenic and Old Lace’ at STLCC-FV

Fl valley deaf theater   A production of “Arsenic and Old Lace” opened last weekend and has free tickets for this weekend Nov. 10 and 11 at the Terry M. Fischer Theatre on the campus of St. Louis Community College-Florissant Valley.

This production will be unlike any other – it features two complete, but separate, casts. One cast performs the play in American Sign Language, while the other voices the play in English.

“Each time you see a deaf actor sign, you will hear an actor voice the lines in English, almost like dubbing an animated film,” said Dan Betzler, director of “Arsenic and Old Lace.” “Both the hearing and the deaf can come together and really enjoy this production.”

The play, a classic, is about a family known as Brewster. Insanity runs in the family. Two sweet old aunts take it upon themselves to poison lonely old men with nothing to live for, as an act of charity. Their nephew, Mortimer, has just proposed, and is trying to negotiate his way around the shenanigans of the house while trying to keep his fiancé from fleeing.

‘Arsenic and Old Lace’ runs Nov. 10 and 11 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are free; doors open 30 minutes before show time, first come, first served.

It’s been five years since there’s been a deaf theatre production, yet the College has a history of offering the unique theater experience going back to 1978.

“The deaf community has a very limited amount of opportunities to audition for live theater, so we consider it an honor to be able to present this on our campus,” said Betzler.

‘Arsenic and Old Lace’ runs Nov. 3, 4, 10 and 11 at 7:30 p.m. A matinee performance is Nov. 5 at 2 p.m. Tickets are free; doors open 30 minutes before show time. Seats are first come, first served. Terry M. Fischer Theatre is located at St. Louis Community College-Florissant Valley, 3400 Pershall Road.

STLCC-Florissant Valley offers both theater and deaf communication programs for students interested in pursuing associate degrees. To learn more visit
