Valley of Flowers Adds Extra Night At Knights’ Grounds, New Venders, Bands
BY CAROL ARNETT
Lance Lombardo, chairman of the Valley of Flowers Committee, was asked what he was looking forward to this year, he said “dry weather.” But, he added that he was also looking forward to some new things, including a dog show and demonstration. He added, “we’ll have some different vendor and different foods.”
Lombardo also said he was excited about the parade this year. “We’ll have ten marching bands, with all the Hazelwood and Florissant high school represented.”
Also new this year is family night at the Knights of Columbus grounds. On Thursday, April 30, from 4 until 8 pm, the grounds will be open for a family night. No one under 18 will be admitted without a parent, and special lower pricing will be offered for rides and food.
The rest of the festival kicks off Friday with events beginning at the Eagan Center. The flea market, craft sale, and plant sale will all begin at noon.
The Eagan Center will also host the children’s performing arts festival, with acts throughout the day Friday and Saturday.
The Cinco de Mayo village was held at the Eagan Center. It returns this year, starting at 10 am Friday with Hispanic dance lessons and piñata making. It continues through Friday and Saturday with a variety of activities and music.
The Friday activities continue Saturday, with the addition of the car show on St. Francois Street from 8:00 am until 3:00 pm.
The baseball games that were added to the festival a few years ago will be back again this year, with McCluer facing McCluer North on Friday at 7:00, and Trinity taking on DuBourg Saturday at 2:00. Both games will take place at Koch Park field 1. Also at Koch, the St. Louis Unions, a vintage baseball team, will be playing on the soccer field at 1:00 on Saturday.
On Sunday, the festival wraps up with the parade and the queen crowning immediately following the parade. This year’s parade theme is “Florissant goes to the Movies,” so expect to see some creative floats celebrating movies through the years.
