West Lake Landfill Tour, April 14

Mayor Robert G. Lowery, Sr. announced today that he and Councilman Keith English (Ward 4) along with representatives of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) and the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) will be offering a tour to the West Lake Landfill on Wednesday, April 14, 2010.  The tour will be approximately two hours in length at the site in which busses will be leaving the John F. Kennedy Civic Center at 1:00 p.m. and returning at approximately 4:00 p.m.

Mayor Lowery noted “The City of Florissant is deeply concerned about the EPA’s decision to leave radioactive waste in the West Lake Landfill site rather than transfer it to a licensed site in Utah or Idaho where the radioactive materials are being shipped from all the other St. Louis sites.”  The radioactive waste in the West Lake Landfill poses a potential health threat to the residents of North St. Louis County and the City of St. Louis.  The West Lake Landfill lies within the Missouri River floodplain and aquifer.

Radioactively contaminated West Lake groundwater flows into the Missouri River. The Missouri American Water Company’s water intake and treatment plant for drinking water for all of North County, north of Interstate 70, is located just eight miles downstream from West Lake. That includes Florissant, the County’s largest municipality.

“I and my administration are asking for the support of North County residents, in addition, all of the St. Louis metropolitan area to let your voices be heard regarding the EPA’s neglect of this area within our community that poses many potential health problems to our lifetime and our children’s lifetime,” remarked Lowery.

RSVP by April 7  by contacting Mayor Lowery’s office at (314) 839-7601 if you would like to attend the tour which leaves the JFK Civic Center at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday April 14, 2010.
